HEED THE CALL OF YOUR ALMA MATER …

Drakensberg Secondary School is celebrating 95 years of educational excellence this year. In order to commemorate this remarkable milestone, the school has planned a number of activities involving all stakeholders at the school.

One such event that coincides with the celebrations is the construction of the long awaited and much anticipated School Hall. The Divine Life Society of South Africa has generously undertaken to spearhead this massive project by providing the funds for the superstructure of the hall. However, the onus lies on the School to see the project to completion so that it serves as a valuable asset in serving the school community. In view thereof, the school is embarking on a rigorous campaign in order to raise the substantial amount needed to bring this vision to fruition.

Social partners and individuals, many of whom have had no prior association with the school, have already pledged their support, financially and otherwise. In keeping with this spirit of benevolence, an urgent appeal is being made to ex-students, parents and patrons to support this worthy initiative and to give back to their alma mater by contributing generously to this cause.

Cash donations can be forwarded to the school secretary or deposited directly into the project account, details as follows:

Young litigators – DSS learners impress at the constitutional court…

Litigators

Drakensberg Secondary School are Finalists at the National Moot Court Competition-2014

Vesumusa Zuma and Kiasha Pillai, Grade 11 learners, were one of the five teams representing KZN at the National Moot Court Competition in Pretoria that took place from 9 – 12 October 2014. The learners were also taken on an excursion to the Constitution Hill, Constitution Court and Freedom Park.

They gave an excellent account of themselves at the competition and engaged in meaningful interactions with several high profile dignitaries such as the National Deputy Minister of Education, Enver Surtie ; Justices of the Constitutional Court, Justice Cameron and Justice Sisi Khampepe as well as Judge of the High Court, Jody Kollapen.

This is what they had to say about their experiences: “I learnt that we need to overcome individual differences to succeed as a team. I also learnt how to research meaningfully for information, how to speak in public and how to think on my feet. I learnt how to overcome our inferiority complexes when confronted with learners from more advantaged schools and possibly backgrounds. I made myself concentrate on the fact that they were wearing a school uniform just like me and that made us equal”. Vesumusa Zuma, Learner, Drakensberg Secondary School, KZN; “We had a life-changing weekend!

The Competition assisted me to think more open-minded and out of the box about issues and situations I do get into. It also has improved my creative lateral thinking, writing and oral skills. I am now sure of the career path that I want to follow. ”. Kiasha Pillai, Learner, Drakensberg Secondary School, KZN.  They were accompanied by the school co-ordinator, Mrs. S. Pillai and the KZN district co-ordinators, Mrs. P. T. Njoko and Mrs. Kheswa.
